System Management Tools

As a developer, you should take charge of your development machine and make sure it is ready for work. I do not mix work and play. In fact, I own several laptops of different flavors so I can make sure everything I need to do on any machine works.

There are a number of really nice tools to help you manage a system. Typically, between semesters, I do a complete rebuild of my machines so I know what shape they are in when the next term starts.

If you add programs, delete programs, open up email, or surf the Internet, odds are that your machine will get sick. That sickness can lead to severe problems. You should run a good anti-virus program, or course, and you should have a good backup system.
